Evaluation of the Remake of The Breakfast Club

Evaluation
Overall, I think that our remake of the breakfast club was a definite success. By doing this practical work it allowed my group to develop our filming skills, acting skills and also editing skills. We filmed in a variety of places, such as the corridors, the canteen, outside the college and in various classrooms.
However we did come across some problems whilst filming the breakfast club as one of the first scenes was of a BMW car which we could for obvious reasons not get a hold of so we had to improvise with what resources were available to us.

We also had a few problems with editing as we found that many of the scenes didn't fit together meaning we would have to re record a lot of the filming that we originally done, also when we attempted to embed the breakfast clubs sounds track it would work as the software did not allow us to do this so on this occasion we had to improvise as well.
We Also had a few minor problems with actually adding the title sequences, as we tried to find the exact font and color of the titles seen in the film, we had to choose fonts that were similar to the ones seen in the film.
Overall I think that filming the breakfast club was a great experience and increased my skills when it comes to media studies. It was good practice for our real coursework where we will have to film our own scenes.
If I was to redo this whole experience I would make sure that I have many more camera angles and divide my time equally when filming and editing. I would also make sure that we had props thoughout the scenes to make it more similar to the original, as well as spending extra time on editing as its one of the most important sections in the production process.

Research - Watching Extension 5

1.Thomas Sutcliffe means that the film needs to gain your attention straight away from the beginning, because there is no point going to watch a film if you don't instantly enjoy it.

2. The director Jean Jacques Beineix says that the risks of instant arousal this man show all of the good bits of the movie early leaving all the not so good parts for the rest of the movie which is bad as it has to be balanced all the way through. If not the audience will get bored and may not watch the rest or they may give it a bad rating.

3. A good beginning must make the audience feel that it doesn't know nearly enough yet, and at the same time make sure that it doesn't know too little. This is to make sure they are not showing too much excitement and not too boring. For example most movies usually start of with normal discussion of the characters which can get boring and most of the action is in the middle where it gets peak.

4. A classic opening by Stanley Kauffman would be some establishing shot of the area where the mail film will be taking place. They could also video all the characters doing something else. This allows the viewers to see all the characters one by one and on every character their name should show. This makes it easier for the audience to visualize who plays which character.

5. Kyle Coopers title sequence for the film seven is so effective because of the way the letters move on the screen this makes the whole title sequence look active. If the letters did not move and they just stayed still this would have been boring so i think it was successful to make the letters move around like that. The letters also move of the screen like they are stuck/trapped this is good as already it tells the viewer that someone in the move may be isolated in their thoughts or something. It puts many different definitions in your head. The music used is spooky. The music makes you feel scared. This is effective as i think this is what it was there to do (scare the audience)

6. Orson Welles wanted to make the audience jump as he put an explosion in the beginning. The audience even me wasn't expecting this making me jump a little. He did this by having people acting as a norm in the society and then dramatically having a massive car explosion.
Universal studios put title credits over the opening I don't think this worked out for me and I didn't really like that they done that. It didn't look good. I think they did this for promotion

7. Film Nior happens when the start of the films shows the end of the story line. I like this type of effect as it allows the viewer to have a better understanding of the film making them enjoy it more. However i also think that it spoils the story line for the viewer are they will already know whats going on. I guess it depends on whether u like it or not.

8. A beginning is where the viewer first learns about the  movie. If they do not have a clear understanding about whats going on in the beginning of the movie, this will stop them from potentially liking the movie as a whole. The beginning must be interesting to the reader. That's why some producers add the film Nior in the beginning so the audience are already glued to their seats

Location of Filming

This is the first location we will be using because it is a local quiet area and i will be using my Fathers car to shoot a scene of the title sequence.

We will then use this park location as the flashback location which is local to the first location so not much movement will be necessary.

Change of scenario

We changed the whole scenario of a boy being mislead. This is because it caused corruption to our group causing collision in what everyone was saying. So I came up with the idea of a girl getting domestically abused. I thought of this idea through 'Murdered by my boyfriend' Which was a channel four teen drama. We thought this idea clear and throughly and thought that this would be best for us to act out and we could gain a lot of shots from it.

Feedback

The feedback we received was to make our title sequence simpler than it already is, as he thought there was too many things going on for a title sequence. Also we was told domestic violence is a topic that wold be hard for us, as he thought it would be difficult for us to make it look serious. We'll use music and sound effects in order to make more realistic.

What inspired me

Murdered by my boyfriend

This is a youth drama and it was directed by Paul Andrew Williams and written by Regina Moriarty
At a party teenager Ashley meets the older Reece, whom she finds handsome and charming with the ability to make her feel special. They start dating and, whilst it is apparent that he is pathologically jealous and possessive, the naĆÆve young girl initially finds it reassuring that he cares for her alone. However when she is pregnant he viciously hits out at her, later apologizing in floods of tears and begging forgiveness. Ashley assumes that it was her fault for antagonizing him but his violence continues and he becomes ever more controlling. She decides to leave him but he is not the sort of boy to take rejection lightly and tragedy results.

Real media texts

Gridiron Gang

Despite the fact I haven't seen this film but the text really stood out for me as it's not to complexed it's simple. As well as the colours are basic and might be something we might consider using when it comes to making and editing our title sequences. Furthermore the text doesn't look childish but looks mature and serious, fitting well with our title sequence .

My brother the devil

This scene was set in a urban house and as is part of our title sequence as theres going to be a party and where one of the characters sneaks out in order to go to this house part. This will fit our title sequence good because it's going to be in a similar area.

Eastenders

Some of the title sequence involves a gun and this inspired it due to the fact they are fighting over the gun it's very similar to the scene also we will leave it at a cliffhanger. Also it's inspired our title sequence because it builds tension and throughout the title sequence the reason for the gun is a girl gets raped at a party and the brother finds out and go's to seek out revenge.

Font Styles / Typeface (24)

Font Styles

The type of font styles i would use would be firstly Chiller as a film title because the font of it looks cool which would go well with a youth drama as it syncronises well with the storyline and characters to wanting to be cool. I may also use Flat Brush for similar reasons but also because it is bold and has a mean look to it which goes well with the genre and will intrige the target audience.

On the other hand for a high school drama i would use the font Hollow, as it looks jazzy and will also syncronise well with the whole school theme in a bright yellow to also attact viewers as it adds a fun effect makes the viewers feel as if something exciting is bound to happen.

Research - Favorite film analysis 7

The Film title sequence I have decided to analyse is 'Beautiful Thing'

The type of title sequence it uses is titles on a moving image. In this scenario the moving image is of the boy running away and it shows the distribution company. Which is 'Channel Four Films'. Followed by the production company... World Production.

They then show a few of the cast names Linda Henry, Glen Berry and Scott Neal. With Ben Daniels and Tameka Empson. I have done my individual research to find out that those are the cast names as in the film it does not say. These credits are then followed by the main Title of the film 'BEAUTIFUL THING'.

Then the Writers name: Johnathan Harvey, Producers names: Tony Garnett and Bill Shapter
and Directors name: Hettie Macdonald

Sub-genres for teen dramas (11)

The sub-genres for teen dramas are musical dramas, love dramas, adult dramas, romantic dramas and supernatural dramas. An example for a musical teen drama would be Grease as it is based around the lifestyle of youths and the characters throughout the film are singing. Another musical teen drama example would be High School Musical which is distributed by disney who usually aims their films to a younger audience. HSM is based around teens who are a group of friends who eventually form a group to start singing but along the way go through a lot of drama. An example of an adult teen drama would be films such as Kidulthood & Adulthood as they have some scenes in the film which are too strong for younger viewers so this would be classified as an adult teen drama.

What is Genre and Teen Drama film (8)

A genre is a type of film which is categorised. For example a film where there is lots of fighting and shooting would be an action film or a scary/jumpy film would be a Horror/ Thriller those are types of genres. There are many genres nowadays to choose from:

Action
Horror
Thriller
Comedy
Sci-Fi
Fantasy
Family
Adventure
Adult
History
Romance
Drama

And many others to choose from.  A Teen Drama film is a type of genre which is a drama which is based around the lifestyle of teens so examples of this would be Mean Girls, 10 Things I Hate About You, Kidulthood, Adulthood, Inbetweeners and others.

Institutions that produce teen dramas

Touchstone Pictures is one of the institutions which produces teen dramas and the film that they produced was 10 Things I Hate About You.

Another Institution which produces teen drama films are Paramount which has produced many such as Mean Girls, Ferris Bueller's Day Off, Grease and Pretty in Pink.

Research - Who makes the title sequences? 9

The people that make the title sequences are the designers: http://www.artofthetitle.com/designers/

There are some famous grafic desingers:
Paul Randbest known for his corporate logo designs, including the logos for IBM, UPS, Enron.
Milton Glaser His designs include the I ♥ NY logo, his Bob Dylan poster, the DC bullet logo used by DC Comics from 1977 to 2005.
Saul Bassbest known for his design of motion picture title sequences, film posters, and corporate logos.
David CarsonHe is best known for his innovative magazine design and many, many more.

Research - What is genre 8

Genre itself can have many definitions however the definition that mostly everyone knows it for is a style or category of art, music, or literature.

Teen films are films aimed specifically at teens. I think these are good as the production companies already know majority of teens love to watch films so by them aiming movies at teens will get their film even more reception.
Some of the main scenarios in teen films are conflict within relationships, conflict with an older generation (as we see in kidulthood), romance and sexually active.
when the production company makes a film aimed at teens they look at Altman's theory which is the Semantic and Syntactic way. Teens watch teen dramas because it is set up in a syntactic way (the stories the film tells) they want to sympathies with the characters they see.

Analyse the type of title sequence used for your favourite film (7)

Kidulthood

The tile sequence in Kidulthood opens up with the film distributors which is Revolver entertainment and HanWay Films. Then they continue with the name of the production companies which were A Stealth Films / Cipher Films which is in association with TMC Films. However in this title sequence there is no opening with credits of the cast and editors and directors etc. it just opens up wit the distributing company and production company. Then they introduce the film with a slow motion effect of someone playing football and there are then no other credits shown until the end of the film. I think the cast isn't shown at the beginning because this is an independent film so there aren't as much cast whereas with big hollywood films there are opening title sequences of cast and directors because there are many people involved within the film.

Research - What is a title sequence 3

A title sequence is the way that films or television programs show their title, production company, cast members and visuals and sound producers. Title sequences sometimes are on a moving object or simply just on a still image.

Titles on a blank screen: there is usually a white type face is used on a black backroundto create a high ontrst. This is old and plain not many people use it now as it is a low budget. They can offer a simple and uncomplicated way to include institutional information at the beginning.

Titles on still images: its a wayto incooperate text with a visual image to hint at the tone or genre of the film.

The first person to use a title sequence at the beginning of a film was Thomas Eddison.  He created many devices that have changed life around the world, including the phonograph, the motion picture camera and a long lasting electric light bulb.

The invention on tv led to people staying home (expand)

Things to talk about:
Titles over moving images
Titles using animatino or motion
Narrative title sequences
Discrete title sequences
Stylised title sequences

Post a photo of your worksheet and pick your favourite title sequence (6)

My favourite title sequence out of the 4 types of film is Mean Girls because the style of font they used was big and bold easy to read and see the names of the cast and who the producers of the film are and the costume designers and so on. I also favourited this film title sequence because they use yellow and orange for first and surname which is intriguing it stands out and makes the film feel more lively.

Analyse 2 Title Sequences (4)

The two title sequences i have chosen to analyse is Godzilla and Alien Isolation.

Godzilla

Throughout the whole of Godzilla they have credits of the film institution which is Warner Bros. Pictures and Legendary Pictures and then the rest of the credits are the cast, the directors, costume designers, producer and many more. With Godzilla in the background there are a lot of Cave paintings and as shown in the screenshot above they show the old age images in the background while the credits are shown. Which links with the film because Godzilla is a old age dinosaur. There is also wartime footage which tells us around what age this film is based around.

Alien Isolation

Alien Isolation is game credits which unlike film title sequences does not have a film institution as it is a game and also doesn't have directors and cast. The title sequences use for Alien Isolation is credits such as the editor, lead programmer, lead artist, creative lead, seƱor producer and many others. Although they don't have a film institution they have a game institution company which is SEGA a worldwide institution which use to be one of the biggest companies back in the days. In the background of this title sequence is a column beaming white which sears through the darkness (black background) which fades in in a pixelated way. Then towards the end of the introduction of the film the film title is used with the same font as the white column and then the word 'Alien' is shown there on its on on a black background and the the word 'Isolation' fades in in the same pixelated way as it has been doing throughout he credits.

Research - Teen films and their audinces 10

There are  different Audiences

Primary- This is the main audience they have the direct interest in the film. These are the teens themselves.

Secondary- This is not designed for them however they may view it because of their children, family, friends etc.

A possible audience for teen films are the teens themselves. They re the main audience as the movie is mainly directed at them. The may watch the film as it may have a link to them. They hmay have been through the same scenario as in the film, therefore they cn syphaphise with it.
I also think young adults play a part of an audience for teen films as they just broke the teenage life and they may still just purely be intersted in the movie.
